About a girl

A same sex wedding in Alentejo, emotional and intense!

“About a girl” is the story of these two girls and their private property same sex wedding in Alentejo.

It was in a hot August day, in the backyard of that white house with a blue stripe, that Tatiana and Joana got married. I could say they were both nervous, but the truth is that the commotion was a lot bigger on the outside than on the inside of their rooms. The property had enough rooms for them to get ready separately and so they did.  Two wedding dresses, both different and yet so elegant. Tatiana drank a glass of wine while she had her hair & make up done. On the other hand, Joana walked around the house, coordinating a few things. I could see all they wanted was the “I do”  time to come. And it did. And it was beautiful. And it couldn’t have been any different, because it was intimate, shared and adored.

It’s true all weddings are surrounded by joy and love. This was, however, even more so. Maybe there’s still some social prejudice, as same sex couples still face some limitations. In Portugal, same sex weddings have only recently been made legal, and there’s still a long way to go. But above all, on this day, I felt love overcame barriers. On this day, they symbolized that which is most beautiful in the act of love: the freedom to do it.

What a privilege it was to be part of this story!
