A surprise proposal in Lisbon
As a photographer, I’ve been witness to countless love stories, each one unique and enchanting in its own right.
But there are moments that stand out. Roger and Claudia’s surprise wedding proposal amidst the splendor of Lisbon’s Botanical Garden is one such story—a narrative of anticipation, and clandestine coordination.
It all began two months prior, when Roger, currently living in Lisbon, reached out to me with a request that would require the utmost secrecy and precision. He envisioned a declaration of love amidst the beauty of the botanical garden in Ajuda, and entrusted me with the task of capturing the big moment.
From the outset, it was clear that this would be no ordinary assignment. Roger’s vision was clear—he wanted the photographic coverage of the moment to be a complete surprise, with me pretending to be a tourist, capturing candid moments from afar until the pivotal moment arrived.
In the days leading up to the proposal, we meticulously planned every detail, from the location—the magnificent stone staircase—to the timing and logistics. Roger provided me with a photograph of Claudia and detailed descriptions of their attire, ensuring that I wouldn’t miss them amidst the Sunday morning serenity of the garden.
I arrived early in the morning. Only one other family was strolling through the garden, which would make it easier for me.
Spotting Roger and Claudia amidst the tranquil landscape, my heart raced with excitement. I discreetly followed them around through my lens and redirected my camera towards the majestic staircase when Roger knelt before his beloved.
I watched as Roger’s nervous energy gave way to unwavering resolve, and Claudia’s tearful joy mirrored her immense surprise. Later, however, she confided that she had been suspicious of his wedding proposal, because he’d been acting strange that morning.
After the heartfelt proposal, I approached the couple, revealing my role in orchestrating the clandestine affair with him. Amid laughter and moments of conversation, I continued to photograph them and before we knew it, the photoshoot had happened. It was so light and sweet.
I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to bear witness to such a genuine moment. And as I moved away and left them behind, all I could think of was how lovely it would be to see them again one day.
THANK YOU!
