GETTING MARRIED IN FORTE DA CRUZ
GETTING MARRIED IN FORTE DA CRUZ
What to expect from this unique venue
So, you finally did it: you’ve booked your wedding venue and Forte da Cruz was your choice. But how will your wedding day unfold?
Forte da Cruz, in Estoril, is without a doubt one of the most breathtaking wedding venues overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, in the Lisbon area.
As a photographer, there are venues I visit often, and then there are venues that truly stay with me — Forte da Cruz is very much the latter. It was the venue I photographed the most last year, yet no two weddings ever felt the same. Each celebration brought a new atmosphere, a different light, and a unique interpretation of the space.
With its stone walls, dramatic ocean views, and layers of history in every room, Forte da Cruz offers an incredible balance between grandeur and intimacy. From quiet, emotional moments inside its historic rooms to joyful celebrations overlooking the sea, it’s a venue that tells a story even before the wedding day begins.
For me as a photographer, that means endless inspiration — natural textures, changing light, and backdrops that feel both elegant and timeless. Combined with a beautiful marquee for the reception and versatile spaces for every part of the day, Forte da Cruz is truly a one-of-a-kind wedding venue on the Lisbon coast.
The main goal of this blog post is not only to showcase the beauty of this venue, but also to share my personal experience of photographing weddings there from start to finish.
Having worked at this venue so often, I’ve come to understand how each space flows throughout the day, how the light changes from morning to sunset, and how couples can make the most of everything the castle has to offer.
This is a behind-the-scenes look at the venue through a photographer’s eyes — highlighting the moments, locations, and details that consistently result in meaningful, authentic wedding photos, while helping future couples envision how their own day might unfold at Forte da Cruz.

Come with me on this journey to help you envision your own wedding day!
1. Overall view of the venue
This majestic castle by the sea, with its high walls and unique architectural features, is eye-catching even from a distance. Once you get closer, it’s impossible not to admire in awe its stunning views from the balcony and the detail of the paintings on the historical room’s walls.
From early afternoon till late night, the light moves trough the rooms and spaces with perfect harmony and beauty.
2. Getting Ready at the Venue
One of the things I love most about weddings at Forte da Cruz is that many couples choose to get ready on-site. There’s a bridal suite available. However, I admit I prefer the charm of the historical rooms.
These rooms are filled with character — wooden wall moldings, classic paintings, textured details and soft natural light filtering through the windows.
From a photographer’s perspective, they add depth and atmosphere to getting-ready photos. Every corner feels elegant and lost in time, and the contrast between delicate portraits and the strong architectural elements creates images that feel both romantic and powerful.
3. First Look
One of the most emotional moments of the day — and one I always encourage couples to consider — is the first look. At Forte da Cruz, this moment can happen almost anywhere, depending on the couple’s vision and personality. Couples can choose the intimacy of the historical rooms. Others opt for the tower, with the sea in the background.
From my photographer’s perspective, both options are incredibly powerful: private, unhurried, and filled with genuine emotion. The flexibility of the venue allows each couple to experience this moment in a way that feels entirely their own.
4. Ceremonies
Ceremonies at Forte da Cruz can be held in several locations, each offering a completely different mood. Couples can choose an indoor ceremony, perfect for cooler days or more intimate celebrations, in the winter garden. Outdoor ceremonies are particularly impressive — whether in the South courtyard overlooking the ocean or in front of the iconic main façade.
What makes this venue so special is how well it adapts to different styles. I’ve photographed ceremonies with majestic floral arches overflowing with blooms, as well as minimalist setups with simple arrangements in soft or bold colours.
Every type of decor works beautifully here, enhancing rather than competing with the castle’s charm.
5. Couple's Photoshoot
For couple portraits, Forte da Cruz offers endless possibilities. The gardens surrounding the castle are perfect for romantic, elegant images, with greenery, and ocean views all within walking distance. On the other hand, the tower, the front façade staircase, the courtyard and the rooms are also a beautiful option.
For couples who want something a little more adventurous, the nearby beach is incredible. Especially during the winter months, when the beach is quiet and uncrowded, it becomes the perfect setting for a relaxed moment together.
6. Cocktail Hour
Cocktail hour usually takes place in the tower and/or in the balcony, and this is when Forte da Cruz truly shines. As the sun begins to set over the Atlantic, the light becomes warm and golden, wrapping guests in a magical glow.
From a photographer’s point of view, this is pure perfection — candid moments, laughter, and clinking glasses lit by one of the most beautiful sunsets in Lisbon.
7. Reception
The reception is held in the marquee, connected to the adjacent historic rooms. This combination allows for a smooth transition between dinner and party, blending modern comfort with historic charm.
The marquee offers flexibility for both small, intimate gatherings and large celebrations, while the indoor space adds character and atmosphere for dancing late into the night.
This is the moment when the decor design truly comes to life and the ultimate opportunity for couples to show their attention to detail, through everything they thoughtfully prepared for their guests: from stationary, overall color palette, florals arrangements, table layout and party favors.
It’s possible to have live music during the reception and to add layers of emotion with speeches from your loved ones in between courses.
8. Cake & Party
There are multiple places where a couple can cut the wedding cake. The venue’s staff can get everything ready for that moment at any location you choose, depending on how you envision it. Some couples opt for an indoor moment (usually when it’s either too cold or too windy outside). When possible, the courtyard and the tower are interesting options too.
Take into consideration, however, your guest number. If you have a 80+ wedding and decide to go with the outdoor option, your guests may not be able to stand close to you. They will likely have to occupy the surrounding area.
The dance floor in the historical room with the checkered floor and lime wash walls is always ready for a good party! Additional LED lights can be necessary, because the room is not equipped with party ambient lights.
My personal take
Perfect for small gatherings or big weddings, Forte da Cruz is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after wedding venues in Lisbon. As a photographer, it’s a place that never stops inspiring me — a castle by the sea where every love story feels truly extraordinary.
